graveyard

A
graveyard is another word for cemetery—a designated place for burying dead bodies. The two words are synomous. Graveyards of earlier times may have been more functional and less aesthetic. A graveyard (or cemetery) is quite literally a "yard" of "graves." This very descriptive term was common in earlier times before more modern cemeteries with their park-like atmosphere became the practice. Another term used is burial ground, and you may find references to people buried in the church yard.
