The Powers Institute, 1884, Historical Sketch

Powers Institute, founded in 1856, has for more than a quarter of a, century maintained a high reputation among the schools of New England. Its aim is to furnish thorough preparation for business or for college upon a solid basis of general information. This work-it was never better fitted to accomplish titan at present. Improvements both in general equipment and teaching facilities have been made during the past year, and no effort will be spared to make this school in every respect worthy the patronage of careful parents.

Situated in the healthful and enterprising village of Bernardston, on the Connecticut River R. R., and only seven miles from the Boston & Troy R. R. at Greenfield, it is easily reached from all directions, but at the same time is far enough removed from the turmoil of manufacturing centres to be free from the distractions and temptations peculiar to such places. Bernardston has and deserves a high reputation for the elevated moral and intellectual tone of its community, while for natural advantages of climate and scenery, it may take rank with any place in all this fair valley of the Connecticut. To the student of geology, moreover, this is a region of peculiar interest on account of the numerous fossil remains everywhere to be found.
