Taft, Helen Herron, 1927, Biographical Sketch
MRS. TAFT is the daughter of Judge ]ohn W. Herron and Harriet Collins, of Cincinnati. She is one of eight children, a musician and a founder of the Cincinnati Orchestra. Her father was a law partner of Rutherford B. Hayes before the latter became President. Mrs. Taft had a nervous breakdown in 1909 and the mistress of the White House for a time, was her sister, Mrs. Louis Moore, wife of professor of the University of Cincinnati. It was Mrs. Tail who instituted 5 o'clock tea at the White House. The Tafts have one daughter, Helen Herron Taft, wife of Frederick J. Manning, an instructor in history at Yale University. Their sons are Robert Alphonse Taft. and Charles Phelps Taft, 2d, both of whom are married.
