Washington, Martha (Dandridge) Custis, 1927, Biographical Sketch

THE "FIRST LADY" of America was the daughter of Colonel John Dandridge, of New Kent County, Va. Her first marriage was to Daniel Parke Custis, a rich farmer, from whom she had been widowed seven years, when she married George Washington, in 1759. Mrs. Washington had four children by her first marriage, but only two survived, Martha Parke Custis and John Parke Custis. A granddaughter of the latter became the wife of General Robert E. Lee, Confederate General. The Washingtons had no children of their own. Mrs. Washington was born the same year as the President, and survived him by only three years, dying in 1802.
