General Orders No. 15, 1864, War Department

Officers are hereby prohibited from detaching body-guards and orderlies from other Commands and Departments. Where escorts and orderlies are required by a General Officer, he will detail them from his own command, or they will be assigned to him by the General commanding the forces. When officers are transferred from one Command or Department to another, all troops so detached or assigned will be returned to their Regiments. All troops now detached from a Department to which they belong, will be immediately returned to the Headquarters of their Regiments.
